What is a virtual server?

A Virtual Server is a server that shares hardware and software resources with other systems. A virtual server acts as a link between devices connected on a local area network and the devices on a wide area network that is the internet. It is very as it allows devices to collect more data. Many offices today are using local area networks to stay connected to all devices in the office, but a virtual server gives them the opportunity to connect with other devices too. follow this guide to setup Virtual Server on your WiFi Router

How does it work?

A NAT router takes up a single IP address and all the other devices are given sub-IP addresses. This means that virtually all the devices have the same IP address. When a user on the external internet tries to access this IP address it has to be forwarded through the NAT. This is where a virtual server is required. A virtual server directs these requests from the external internet onto particular ports. Ports help in accessing the files. It helps in keeping the data on the network safe as only a specific set of individuals are allowed to connect to the private network. check how does Virtual Server on your WiFi Router works.

What is a port?

A port is different for all WiFi routers. The details regarding the port are provided in the program settings. In simple terms, Ports are holes in the firewall which allow external devices to connect to the server. The port numbers are different for all routers but the steps to set up a virtual server are similar.

Step by step set up of a virtual server:

For reference we will be using an Archer C9, other routers have a similar approach

Step 1 Log in

Log in and use the web interface of the router.

Step 2

After accessing the web interface, you will see a series a menu options on the upper right side where one of the options will be Advanced.

After clicking on advanced, there will be an option on the left Nat Forwarding. Follow it by clicking Virtual Server. There will be an option on the right top corner saying Add. Click it.

Step 3

Click on the option saying View Existing Server. Out of the options in the menu, select http. All the other information required in all other boxes will be automatically filled as soon as http is selected. follow all these steps and  easily setup Virtual Server on your WiFi Router

Follow it up by entering the PC’s IP address.

Note: If you have to choose a service which is not there on the existing servers, you can do it by manually adding the port number of the router which is found in its program settings. All other parameters have to be entered manually too. The number of virtual servers is not limited and can be set up as per requirement,

Step 4 the users on the internet

The users on the internet have to go to the following address.

The words IP address of computer are to be replaced by the actual IP address of the computer.

This is how the computers on the internet can connect to a local area network.

What are the advantages of a virtual server?

Virtual servers are four times more efficient that nonvirtual servers. This means that less hardware is required for work. Hardware reduction is a goal for all offices. Hardware reduction means less capital investment, a decrease in storage space requirement, and less maintenance cost. All of which lead to cost reduction

Faster server deployment:

Virtual servers can be easily replicated. Thus the time it takes to set up a new server is less as compared to the nonvirtual servers. Setting up virtual servers is easy and the applications of virtual servers are endless. this is the way to setup Virtual Server on your WiFi Router
